Truth, friends? I'm about 1.5 seasons behind on this show. I don't have cable. I cannot justify the price when Mr. Retro and I aren't dedicated TV watchers AND Mr. Retro has things like a dissertation to write. However, we do get Netflix. And honestly, I don't mind being a season behind anyways. The (long winded) point is, I'm behind on what's happening and who's wearing what. So I've done quite a bit of Googling to catch up on costumes ONLY.
If I were to enter this challenge--and I'm not sure I will yet--I'd totally sew something Joan inspired. Joan, from the start, was my favorite character. She's ballsy, classy, straight-forward, a bit catty, and always impeccably dressed. And she has CURVES...! I love that 90% of the time she's dressed in rich jewel tones vs. neutrals. I love that her clothing is perfectly tailored to her body type (then again, if I had a whole wardrobe department dressing me...) These are my contenders/inspiration right now:
Gerti from Gerti's Blog for Better Sewing recently recreated this dress by
appliqueing flowers from a table cloth to her dress.
One of my vintage patterns may work for this one...
A different blue dress...
Separates are a possibility. Joan has a PLETHORA of fabulous separates in her closet...
I really, really, really, really, really (reallyreallyreally) love this dress...
but I suspect my love of this dress is very much about the fabric...
I very much so love this dress... but it is SO above my "pay grade"!
This view doesn't show it very well, but this dress has delightful flutter sleeves
(could be hacked from Colette Taffy pattern)
I did learn how to use my button hole attachment recently...
More separates... I love the two tones of purple.
- Interesting and challenging but not difficult construction
- Something "every day" vs. "special occasion"
- Doesn't require me to buy a new pattern or more fabric
Simple, non? So I'm still pondering if I'll join this or not. I probably will because, lets be honest, the late 1950s-1960s are, by far, my favorite era. What do you think, friends? Any input or other suggestions? Do you have a favorite Joanie outfit you'd like to toss into the ring?
